LeyVa Middle School has two instructional choices – Bulldog Tech and Bulldog Pathways.

This academic learning pathway allows students to go deeper into the content to enact a passion for learning and build upon each individual's strengths. It’s also a chance to try something new. Pathways are linked semester courses where students stay together for their electives in a cohort for the school year. Students in the Bulldog Pathways participate in a six period schedule with language arts, math, history/social studies, science, physical education, and elective pathway.
  • Bulldog Tech is one of two New Tech Network Project Based Learning academic programs in our district. Our program is called Bulldog Tech and it is located on the campus of LeyVa Middle School. To learn more about and see if this program is right for your child, visit Bulldog Tech at LeyVa. Registration for Bulldog Tech and the district's other New Tech Network school Lobos School of Innovation located at Quimby Oak Middle School takes place in the spring.

Students will complete an e-form to chose their Elective Class for the next school year. Elective Classes are assigned on a space available basis. Priority is given to eighth grade students first.

What can I do before the school year begins?
  1. Make sure you child has their Tdap booster shot and two doses of Varicella (VAR). A school immunization law requires all students entering 7 grade in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap and has received two doses of Varicella. All students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot and Varicella given on or after their 7th grade birthday before starting middle school. Parents need to present documentation of their child’s vaccination record to their elementary school's front office before the end of the school year. If you do not have a primary care provider check out this list for immunization clinics.
  2. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in PowerSchool. PowerSchool is a web-based student information system used by Evergreen School District. In middle school, the system lets parents and students see how their student is performing academically, follow their attendance, and communicate with teachers. You can see what scores they have earned on assignments/tests, if there are any missing assignments, and sometimes see upcoming assignments. A mobile phone app is also available to access the same information.
  3. Register for Parent Square. ParentSquare is used for school and district communication, primarily using email and text.
    1. Current ESD students - The ParentSquare account(s) for parents of students currently attending an ESD school will automatically be rolled over to their assigned middle school the week before school begins.
    2. Parents of newly enrolled students need to register for a ParentSquare account after creating a PowerSchool account.
    3. Become familiar with our school website and read our FAQ for New Students.

Advanced Placement

Which middle school courses offer advanced placement?
All our middle schools offer advanced placement classes in math. In May, all 6th grade take a diagnostic math assessment called Algebra 1/Integrated Math 1 Readiness Test or MDTP. Results from the MDTP assessment AND the 2020 CAASPP math assessment assist in determining middle school math placement.
How is my child selected for advanced math class?
For incoming 7th graders, all middle schools offer Common Core Math 7 and Accelerated Math 7/8. Students' scoring at a mastery level qualify for advanced math class for 7th grade. Additional questions about the MDTP math assessment, or the district's set criteria for establishing math placement, can be directed to Mrs. Deborah Ashmore, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. Her email address is dashmore@eesd.org
How can my child be considered for advanced math class if we are new to Evergreen School District?
Students transferring into ESD for the first time as a 7th grader will get the opportunity to take the MDTP at enrollment to see which math class they are eligible to take.
Will taking community enrichment math classes ensure my child is placed an advanced math class?
There is no guarantee that enrichment programs like Valdes Math or Math Enrichment will ensure your child is placed in advanced math at our middle schools.
How will I know if my child was placed in the advanced math class?
You will be notified in August when student schedules are sent out by mail and/or when class schedules are posted in PowerSchool, which is typically the day before school begins.
